How To Compost 101: Composting Guide for Homeowners
What to compost, how to do it, and curbside pickup made it easy
What Is Composting and Why It Matters
Composting is controlled decomposition of organic materials (food scraps, yard trimmings) into a soil-building amendment. When organics go to landfill, they create methane. Composting keeps organics out of the landfill, reduces climate impact, and returns nutrients to local soils.
Benefits of Composting
- Reduces landfill waste and methane emissions
- Builds healthier, water-retentive soils for gardens and lawns
- Lowers trash volume (can reduce overflow and fees)
- Teaches simple zero-waste habits at home
Two Ways to Compost at Home
Curbside Composting
(Easiest for Most Homes)
- You sort compostables at home; we pick up weekly and process professionally.
- No backyard space, turning, or temperature monitoring required.
- Professionally managed systems deliver consistent, high-quality compost.
- Local loop in Northern Colorado: request finished compost back in spring.
DIY Backyard Compost
(For the Hands-On Gardener)
- You manage a pile or bin by balancing “greens” (food scraps) and “browns” (leaves, shredded paper/cardboard).
- You’ll need space, a bin or pallet setup, dry browns, water, an aerator or pitchfork, and time.
- Ongoing tasks: add materials, aerate, manage moisture, allow time to cure before use.
Accepted Items
(YES)
- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Coffee grounds and paper filters; tea leaves (no staples)
- Eggshells (crush for faster breakdown)
- Uncoated paper towels and napkins
- Small yard trimmings (leaves; grass in moderation)
Tip: Keep loads light and liners tied for clean, low-odor set-outs.
Not Accepted
(NO)
- Plastics (including bioplastics unless BPI-certified), glass, metal
- Liquids, oils/grease, fats
- Pet waste and litter
- Coated/laminated cups and plates; glossy stickers and labels
Why: These contaminate finished compost, slow processing, or introduce pathogens/chemicals.
